Trial ? NO serial number included with the external hard drive (30-day free trial)
Royalty ? serial numbers included with the external hard drive

Please keep in mind that Memeo AutoSync is only a trial version.

The following Western Digital product below determines whether your version of AutoBackup is packaged with a product key:

Trial - My Book Essential
Royalty - My Book Home, My Book Office, My Book Studio, My Book World

Your product key can be found in the installation manual, on a sticker, in the technical support section.

How do I register if I do not have a product key code. It says I have 24 days left on my trial. I did not buy a trial. I bought a full $ 129.00 unit. It does not say on the box that it is a trial.
Looking at your site, it looks like I am to buy the software for $ 29.00, but nowhere was I informed that this unit was sold incomplete.
The My Book Ess. Edition 2.0 came with :
The unit, a usb cord, a single page install sheet and 1 yellow sheet that says "save this sheet" with tech support numbers on it.

I have already installed the unit and I am using it.

What do I do about this issue? Please provide a product key or some free download that will complete my purchase of your product

Please advise in written form. Don't send me to some elses faq.

Thank you

Your My Book Essential is only bundled with a trial version of Memeo AutoBackup. Therefore, you do not have a product key. Please read the FAQs carefully before posting, thank you.

I apologize if this is a "stupid" question, but I bought this external hard drive [WD My Book Essential Edition] assuming that it included everything I needed. By reading this thread, am I understanding correctly that I only have a trial version of the backup, and have to pay once again in order to use this product that I already purchased? In other words I don't have a product key to register my product. Do all external hard drives work this way?? This doesn't make sense to me. If someone could fill me in, that would be fabulous.

mlebahe,

The My Book Essential edition only comes with the trial version of AutoBackup. You are going to have to purchase a product key in order to continue using our software after the trial version.

Here is where I have a problem with this.

Just purchased the Mybook Essential Edition.

Plugged it into the computer, Western digital installation program pops up and gives me a list of programs to install. Cool I think this beats copy and paste.

I noticed immediately that the Sync Application when highlighted notes that its a 30day trial. So I decided to install the Backup application that does NOT have any 30day trail notation next to it what so ever.

I feel that I was tricked into installing this software whether it be WDs fault or MEMEO. At this point I need to purchase the software for an executive at my company and register it in his name.

I looked for a phone number to call on your website but none were listed. Do you not want to hear from your customers at all?

In my opinion, you ought to rethink this. Like others, I naturally assumed that the Memeo software that came with my Western Digital My Book Essential Edition was part of the package. When the message popped up telling me it was a trial version, I just felt ripped off. I'm smart enough to google "freeware windows XP backup," so I'll be uninstalling your software and you'll have left me with only a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to your brand name.

I bought a WD My Book World Edition II and there's no sticker in any technical manual. So... where is it? Have I installed a piece of software that is going to be of no use to me in 30 days? (seeing as it appears to be also encrypting my files to a .dcm extension rendering them unaccessable when I'm away from home. Which is why I bought the damn thing in the first place..!)

Like other posters here, I too am aware of other freeware backup software packages and I'm even quite comfortable with just 'cut-and-paste'ing the files to a folder on the drive and maintaining the files myself. It's just unfortunate that nowhere does it mention that I have a trial version until it's installed on my system, especially as here you say it's the full deal.

So... any answers would be appreciated.

Oops. I know, I know, the DCMs are tracking files and the actual files are below them in the Explorer window. Where I couldn't be arsed to look. I am officially an a#@e. ('sucker shuffles guiltily away from the thread, looking sheepish. Before realising that, wait, he still hasn't got a product key! So, I'll just loiter over here until a reply comes up, like Smeagol...)

Just as ITguy38, I did not install the clearly stated trial version of the sync program. I only installed the backup version because it did NOT say that it was trial.

I think this is sneaky and underhanded, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth for both WD and memeo.

Also, I just double-checked the Terms of Use for the backup installation. Nowhere does it mention trial or 30 days there, either. What it does say is:

12. Complete Agreement. This License constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to the use of the Memeo Software and supersedes all prior or contemporaneous understandings regarding such subject matter.
